Mom here. Alex began climbing out of her crib about 2 weeks ago. I was torn between angst and pride. She is so clever that she figured out the easiest way to climb out was to go over the side and onto the chair. Then she would open the door and wander wherever she wanted to go: mom's room in the middle of the night, downstairs after being tucked in if she didn't want to sleep, downstairs when she was "done" napping, etc.
So we converted her crib into the toddler bed. Alex stayed in it until 5:30am for the first 2 nights, but now I might have to administer some very tough love. Mom does not get a lot of sleep when there is a thrashing toddler in the bed who occasionally accidentially kicks (hard!). And Alex talks, moans and sighs in her sleep. We also need to work on binkie extraction...but one thing at a time.
